The Doshas
Governed by the energy of the air and ether elements, Vata Dosha is responsible for mobility, creativity and communication in the body. Negative imbalances of Vata Dosha can result in insomnia, anxiety, dryness and lightness. To keep Vata Dosha in balance, it is important to practice calming activities such as yoga, meditation, and long walks in nature. Eating warm, cooked foods and avoiding cold, raw foods can also help restore balance to Vata Dosha.
Governed by the energy of the fire and water elements, Pitta dosha is characterized by intensity, anger, heat, and inflammation. Pitta Dosha is responsible for metabolism, digestion, and transformation in the body. When in balance, Pitta Dosha brings clarity, focus, and strength. However, when out of balance, Pitta can lead to inflammation, digestive issues, and frustration. To keep Pitta Dosha in balance, it is important to nourish the body with cooling and calming foods, such as cucumber, coconut, and aloe vera.
Governed by the energy of the earth and water elements, kapha dosha is associated with the qualities of being heavy, slow, moist, stable, and solid. Those with a predominance of Kapha in their body and mind often experience feelings of depression, sluggishness, and stubbornness. To maintain balance, Kapha dosha needs to be kept in check by stimulating activity and avoiding stagnation. Ayurveda health and wellness practices such as engaging in regular physical exercise, eating lighter, and incorporating warming spices can help to keep Kapha dosha in balance.
